Words from a Mother's Heart

These thoughts were on my mind today as I sat feeding my sweet baby girl.  Our baby girl Maggie was born at almost 35 weeks with some minor complications from prematurity and genetic issues, namely a very mild cleft palate in the back of her mouth.  Her cleft palate just prevents her from being able to nurse effectively so she had to learn to use a special bottle that did not require her to use as much suction.  For me, nursing was not just a means of feeding my babies but also an important means of bonding with them.  I was so sad I would not have this experience with Maggie and worried that we would not be able to bond as closely.  I didn't get to hold my baby girl the first day of her life as she was whisked away to NICU and then she was on monitors in the incubator and receiving IV fluids, oxygen, and later blue light therapy for a slight case of jaundice.  At first, I didn't know how severe any of her conditions were, and it is so scary seeing your baby like this.

I longed to hold her in my arms but was scared of hurting her.  The next day, I finally had the opportunity.  I was so nervous, but I also desperately wanted to connect with her.  It was hard to hold her close with cords and monitors hooked to her.  She was being fed through a feeding tube at the time so I didn't have the connection of feeding her.  The next day, I arrived to find she had regressed slightly to needing the blue light therapy and worried it was because I had held her the previous day.  My husband finally had an opportunity to hold her that day, but the next day, we needed to let her stay under the blue light so that hopefully she would overcome the jaundice more quickly.  Thankfully, by five days old, she had progressed so beautifully, she was off of everything, including the blue light, IV fluids, and even the incubator warming bed.  We were so excited and hoped to soon bring her home.  I was able to hold her as long as I could stay in the NICU but that still wasn't enough.  I couldn't stay all day and night and during nurse shift changes.  I also still hadn't fed Maggie.  We finally tried feeding her a bottle, and I got her to take most of her first bottle feeding.  I feel that feeding a baby by breast or bottle is an important bonding time.  Babies need to trust the person feeding them.  Even though Maggie learned quickly to use the bottle for me, other nurses would not have success because they were not familiar with Maggie or her special needs.  Maggie did not know them and, thus, did not feel safe with them.  I became frustrated that I was not allowed to stay more to handle her feedings.  I thought my baby would come home within a week since she had progressed so well, but days turned into weeks.  At about 3 weeks old, Maggie had regressed in her feedings from being confused by so many different hands trying to feed her.  She quit taking the bottle even for me for a few days.  I finally got my baby to take the bottle again for me, and I refused to leave her.  I demanded as kindly as I could that we be put into a room where I could stay with her and that was finally accomplished.  My baby girl was ready to come home four days later just before she was four weeks old!  I knew in my heart this was because she thrived on her mother's love.  Babies need to feel spiritually nourished as well as physically nourished.  They need to feel safe and loved, and the most natural place for that is in a mother's loving arms.

As my baby is now a healthy and thriving five month old, I sit feeding her a bottle with these grateful thoughts in my heart.  Maggie often does not want to take her bottle unless she can see my face now.  She needs to know I am there with her.  I do not know what would have happened to her if I had not fought to stay with her and attempted to handle her feedings.  I know that there are many babies born every day who do not know the love of a mother and babies who do not thrive in the NICU because they do not receive this basic love.  Babies know when they are abandoned, and their health shows it.  Now, I am not saying that love has to come from a biological mother or father.  In absence of that connection, babies can develop that same connection to another loving caretaker.  I am a huge supporter of adoption!  I was adopted although as a much older child.  My biological mother did want me and try her best to care for me and for that I am truly thankful.  When she could not care for me because of mental illness, I am also thankful that a loving couple chose to become my parents.  Motherhood is always a choice.  Even though we give birth to a child, we still may not choose to be mothers.  We have to make the conscious decision to care for our children and put their needs above our own.  It is a sacrifice.  When my heart thinks of any baby born into this world who is abandoned and left cold and alone and not cared for, my heart breaks.  No child deserves that treatment!  We are all born innocent and full of potential.  A friend recently posted a sad story of an infant found abandoned in the woods.  People who lived nearby actually heard its tiny cries and were able to save it, but it could have ended so much worse and often does.  I just can't imagine what a tiny infant thinks and feels as it is left lying cold, alone, and hungry.  I do know that a baby does feel.  It feels joy and comfort, and it feels pain.  My only consolation to those babies who lose their lives by being abandoned without ever knowing a loving touch is that they are immediately in the arms of Jesus in heaven and awake to never know pain, sadness, hunger, or any discomfort ever again.  I don't know why I wrote this post except that I needed to get these words written before they were lost forever.  My heart is so full of love for my own babies, but it cries and bleeds for the motherless babies born everyday.  No babies deserve to be unloved!

God will not forsake these babies!

Dear Grieving Mothers on Mother's Day

Mother's Day as a grieving daughter and mother can be hard.  On one hand, I am extremely thankful to God for the precious miracles He has entrusted to me.  On the other hand, I will always feel like an important piece is missing from my life.  I longed for so long to have a "normal" mother daughter relationship.  I was thankful for the mother that God gave me through the miracle of adoption and for the good years we shared together, but the road hasn't always been easy.  I also love being a boy mom, but I longed to have a relationship with a daughter of my own to feel what I never really had with my own biological mother.  I longed to give my own daughter what I never had.  I had a rough life in the beginning in foster and children's homes and finally adopted later in childhood.  After I was married, we decided to start our family and were blessed to have two beautiful, healthy baby boys in 2007 and 2011.  In 2012, we decided to try to have one more in hopes of having a girl.  We were blessed to get pregnant easily and were so excited to find out she was a little girl.  We prepared everything for her...her room, clothes, etc.  Then, after a long and tiring pregnancy while completing my last year of law school and working full time, I finally went into labor at 40 weeks and 6 days.  Labor seemed to progress normally through the day as we monitored my contractions, but when we arrived at the hospital and I was examined, no heartbeat was found.  How could this happen?  Our beautiful baby girl was taken from us just when we thought our dreams would come true.  Over the next five years, I was beyond blessed with two more little baby boys (one a complete surprise) who filled our hearts and home with so much joy.  They were indeed "rainbows" as we refer to them in the loss community.  I won't lie and say there wasn't a tiny bit of disappointment right at the moment I heard "it's a boy" during the ultrasound, but my disappointment disappeared just as quickly because my boys have my whole heart.  They are just amazing!  We thought we were done having babies with four little boys to raise, but in 2018, we got another little surprise blessing.  We were having another little girl!  We finally welcomed our beautiful rainbow daughter in January 2019 in a pretty scary delivery experience when she came a month early and almost died from a placenta abruption.  Her whole pregnancy was my worst, but I am so very thankful for her.  We mothers of angels do not take anything for granted!  I just wish we all could give ourselves some grace and know that others just can never fully comprehend what we feel and that is okay!

My Granny, Grandma, Mom and daughter Mattie are in heaven.

Please know that if you have lost a mother, daughter, beloved grandmother, sister, friend or any person who makes this particular day difficult for you to celebrate, your feelings are completely valid even when others don't understand. Please reach out to me here so I can pray for you and encourage you.

Happy 5th Birthday, Mattie Claire!

5 years!!!  How has it been 5 years since we held you for the first and last time and had to let you go?  At 5 years old, you would be starting kindergarten soon, learning to read, talking up a storm, and just really showing us how wild and crazy life can be with a little girl.  We really miss you a lot here.  We love your brothers so much, but we always know you are missing from our little family.  You will never be forgotten.

This year, Daddy made you a yummy homemade pound cake for your birthday.  We added fresh strawberries and whipped cream for a yummy strawberry shortcake.

We lit your candle and sang you "Happy Birthday."  A church friend brought us a beautiful delicate pink primrose azalea plant.

Your big brothers and cousin made wishes for you and blew out your candle.

A princess in the midst of lots of little princes.

Your cake was very yummy.

Your family loves you very much!

We took you with us to the beach for your birthday.  You would have so much fun playing at the beach with your brothers.

Mother's Day 2018

Mother's Day is always a special day to spend together.  I cherish the title of mother/mom/mommy more than anything in the world, and I am just honored to be the mommy of so many precious babies.  My boys always make me feel like the most loved mother in the world.  We had a simple day of attending church, eating lunch together, and going home to rest and play.

Pictures are always a must.  My sweet big boys each wanted to write a message for me.

And oh how I love these precious little rainbow babies.

Proud mommy to five precious babies.

Our official church picture.  Well all but two of us were smiling so that ain't bad.
Mommy got a little sweet treat at church.  Brody decided to try a jalapeno at lunch.  Haha!

The boys played with bubbles in the yard when we got home.

This sweet baby just wanted to play with Cocoa's dirty ball.

And I just want to remember the mothers that I can't see or talk to anymore here on earth, my Granny, my Grandma, and my Mom.  I also miss my sweet little Mattie everyday and especially on these special days.

Mattie's 5th Christmas

Dear Mattie,

Merry Christmas and happy 4 1/2 year birthday!  We celebrated another Christmas without you.   A lot has happened to our little family since last year.  We moved to another house in another town in another state and have been adjusting to being so far away from you and the rest of our family.  We haven't been able to visit you this year like we usually do.  Your family has visited you and put flowers on your grave for your birthday and other holidays.  We really miss having you here with us at Christmas and every day.  At almost 5 years old, I know you would be getting so grown up and wanting to do more big girl things.  You would be preparing for kindergarten and may be going to pre-k at your big brothers' school.  We wanted to see you open your presents along with your brothers and see your little face light up with joy and excitement.  We wanted you to be a part of our family pictures and memories.  We wanted to see you enjoying Disney World with your brothers and know you would have loved to do all the princess stuff.  It is getting harder to imagine what you would want for Christmas since I can't know you here on earth.  I know in heaven none of these things really matter, but they matter to us down here because they are just another reminder that you aren't here.  Watching Mattox and Grayson playing together so well shows me how much you would likely have loved your brothers.  I think you and Brody would have been very close since you were the closest in age.  He was so excited to get you.  I know you are watching over us all, and I hope you enjoy sharing in our traditions.  We love you and will never forget you.  We will likely have many more years of missing you here with us.  For now, here is how we honored and remembered you this Christmas:

Our family pictures never feel complete without you.
You would have worn matching pajamas with us.

I know you would have loved the Christmas tree and helped decorate it.

Your special ornaments, little tree, stocking, and picture are still my favorite decorations.

We finally got to visit you and take you some new flowers after Christmas.

It was your baby brother's first visit.

All of us together.

I love all 5 of my babies!

Daddy and Cocoa love you too.

You would need some elf pajamas to match your brothers' other Christmas pajamas.

A new Christmas dress for you.

I don't know if you would need a sweater dress too much here, but it has been pretty cold this month.

You could definitely wear this one more around here with a little sweater if it turned chilly.

For presents, you may have wanted an American Girl doll

Barbie dolls would probably also be a hit.  I love these "professional" dolls.

More barbies

And barbie clothes.

And a Barbie house too.

We hope you enjoyed your Christmas in heaven watching over us again!

Love,

Mommy

Dear Papa

[Inspired by the movie and book The Shack.]

I know you are described as a father to the fatherless.  Will you also be a mother to the motherless?  I feel as if I have been denied the love of both.  I know I have been angry with you.  I wanted to blame someone for my loss and pain.  Being denied parents and then the daughter I wanted to know so desperately was just more than I could bear alone.  But I pushed you away again and again.  You sought me out.  Sometimes I did try to listen and to speak back to you, but the words would get all jumbled up.  I failed time and time again as my anger, sadness, and resentment kept me from seeing you.  I want to see you, walk with you, talk with you, and receive comfort from you.  I want to feel the peace of forgiveness and a clear mind.  I know you love me as I love my own children.  I want to sit and talk as father and child telling you everything in my heart.  But I am ashamed of so much in my heart.  My angry outbursts towards my precious husband and babies when I am really just angry at myself.  I feel like I have barely been treading water for years.  I am so tired of doing it alone.  I want to walk on water with you.  I want to cry all of my tears onto your shoulder and have you dry them all away.  I want to feel you loving me especially.  I know that you are good and that evil does not come from you.  I know that sin and death are not from you.  I know that you did not take Mattie from me but that she is alive and perfect and happy with you.  I want to be with you and her.  I want all of my children to know you and be with you.  You are my friend and my father!

Love,
Your Daughter

Mattie Claire's 4th Birthday

Dearest Mattie,

I am so sorry so many people have forgotten how precious you are, but as I have always promised, I will never forget you.  You are with me in my heart every day of my life.

We will do a wonderful job of celebrating you today, I promise.  We will have decorations, cake, and fun things we know you would enjoy.

As I have pondered how we have come this far since the day you came silently into our lives, my heart breaks for all the wonderful memories we have missed with you.  I know you are so beautiful and happy and perfect in your heavenly home.  When I see other people say their living children are angels, I just want to tell them they have no idea what a real angel is.  I held one in my arms and kissed her beautiful face and will love her for the rest of my life until I can hold her again.

When I try to imagine what you would be like at four, I am lost.  I know you would be beautiful and sweet and fun as you grow into a little lady.  You would be learning so many knew things as you begin to prepare to start school.  You may know your ABC's and how to count and write your name and may even be learning to read.  You would probably be able to dress yourself and would probably have a unique style all your own.  With four brothers, I wonder if you would like sports and playing ball or if you would be mommy's girly princess who insisted on dressing up all the time and playing with your dolls.  Mommy would love that!

Mommy just wants you to know that you will always be loved.  She has a really hard time sharing about you because it is hard to talk about without crying and because most people just don't seem to appreciate you.  I just want the world to know how special you are, my little angel.  I hope that you are having the best birthday party ever in heaven and that you will enjoy watching our celebration here too.

With all my heart, happy birthday beautiful girl!  I love you!

Love,

Mommy
