ReplyDeleteTo answer your previous question: 2 is not at all too young for speech therapy. I've evaluated 10 month olds and started therapy services with 12 month olds. At that age it is all play based therapy, but the play is targeting specific goals.
I think I mentioned before that receptive (understanding) skills develop separately from expressive skills, so it is entirely possible to have age-appropriate, normally developing receptive abilities and be delayed in expressive abilities.
Since I don't know Brody I can't say specifically what is going on with him. But I think it is a good idea for him to be evaluated, especially if you were worried enough to ask your pediatrician for a referral. As this age there is a huge range of "typical", so a qualified SLP will be able to do a comprehensive evaluation and be able to tell you if he falls within that typical range or if he does have some delays.
If he does have some delays it is much better to start therapy now than to wait. If he is, say, 6 months behind it will be easier to "catch him up" at this point. You don't want to wait until he's a year or 2 years behind because then the gap keeps growing. Does that make sense?
Oh, I also meant to tell you that the summer before Spencer turned 2 I had three 2 year olds that I did private therapy with. So, I had an almost 2 at home and then three other 2's that I saw weekly. I almost went out of my mind with 2 year olds that summer!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a fun and low-key Easter celebration. It's nice that they did it after Easter instead of having one more thing that week. I am sorry that you had to miss it though :(
